Supporting your friends and family

If you have friends and family you know are lonely you can try to:

  1. Keep in touch - small gestures, saying hello, and invitations can make a difference; let those living far away know that you’re thinking of them by phone, email, text or Skype.
  2. Show your support – think about how you can be supporting and encouraging to them. One example might be speaking positively about local opportunities for social contact and going along with them to a class or group for the first time if they feel nervous.
  3. Listen – pay attention to someone describing feelings of loneliness and help them feel that someone cares and wants to understand. If you’re worried about them, talk to them about what might help.
  4. Don’t give up on them – sometimes people may withdraw, or lose confidence socially. Try to remain gently supportive if they are reluctant to accept help at first.
