Attend an information session and request an initial visit
The information session will give you an opportunity to hear more about fostering for Cambridgeshire County Council and to meet some existing foster carers. You can also request an initial visit. A worker from the team will call you to arrange a mutually agreed time to visit. At the visit they will begin to get to know you and your family, answer questions you may have and talk over the type of foster care you could offer. This will help us all decide whether it is the right time for you to proceed to Stage 1.
If you are already a foster carer for another county council or with a private fostering agency we can fast-track the following stages - please call us on 0800 052 0078.
Return your application form
The form will be sent to you following the initial visit and, once you have returned it, a member of the Fostering Recruitment and Assessment Team will contact you. They will discuss your application further and arrange to discuss in more detail the processes of the assessment. Following this visit we will send off for your checks and references.
This is a training course of six short sessions spread out over three weeks to help you decide if fostering is right for you and your family and learn about the skills required to help you care for Looked After Children. The course is led by a fostering trainer, social workers and foster carers and one session is led by looked after children and young people.
At the end of the course you will be asked if you would like to proceed to the second stage of the assessment. We will continue to this next stage once we have received sufficient checks and references.
Complete your assessment
You will work with an allocated social worker who will visit you and your family over a period of a few months to get to know you and your family in much more detail and to start to prepare you all for fostering. You will be asked to do some reading and tasks as part of this assessment and begin to complete a workbook. Your social worker will prepare a full report for your assessment as a foster carer. You will see this report and have the chance to add any comments you would like to make.
Attend a fostering panel
You will attend the Fostering Panel with your social worker. The panel will have read your report and will discuss your assessment with you and decide whether to recommend you as a foster carer for Cambridgeshire County Council. Soon after, you will receive a letter from the Fostering Service Agency Decision Maker confirming the decision.
Your assessing social worker will support you for the first six weeks and will introduce you to your supervising social worker. You will receive on going support to help you provide foster care for Cambridgeshire children and you will have access to local training and support from other foster carers.
