Post-16 Education, training and employment

Young people can leave school or college between the ages of 16 – 19;  however, since 2015 there has been a legal requirement for them to continue in learning or training until they are 18. Further information on the school leaving age. Schools and colleges should help their students to understand their options for the future and have a duty to secure independent careers guidance for year 8-13 pupils. Details on schools' statutory duty to provide careers guidance is available on the GOV UK website.

Children and young people with a Statement of Special Educational Needs / Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan (from September 2014) will be helped to think about plans for the future during their annual reviews. This planning will start at any age that is right for the child but at least by age 14.  Please talk to your son or daughter's school or your SEN Casework Officer for more information

More information about options in further education, employment and training are in the preparing for adulthood section
