Consultation on the amalgamation of Eastfield Infant School and Westfield Junior School in St Ives
What is the proposal?
The proposal is to construct a new school, on the sites currently occupied by Eastfield and Westfield, during the period summer 2019 to summer 2020 and then amalgamate Eastfield and Westfield Schools to create one primary school with a new name which would open on 1 September 2020.
It is planned that the proposed new school would be established as a 630-place primary, this would provide an increase in the number of places in each year group from 80 to 90 places. A high level initial study has been commissioned by the Council exploring the opportunity for demolishing the existing infant and junior schools and providing all required accommodation within a new purpose built primary school. Both schools are located on large sites which would enable the new school to be constructed while continuing to use the existing buildings.
During the course of the recent 'informal' consultation period, which ended on 18 May 2018, 90% of those who responded were in favour of the proposal to amalgamate the infant and junior schools. Subsequently, following separate meetings of the two governing bodies on 5 June 2018, both Eastfield Infant and Nursery School and Westfield Junior School formally decided to proceed to the next formal consultation stage of the process. The Council has therefore published a statutory notice in accordance with sections (15) (1) and 10(1) of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 with intent to close Eastfield Community Infant and Nursery School and Westfield Community Junior School on 31 August 2020 and to open a new community primary school serving the 4 to 11 age range (with continuing nursery provision). The complete proposal is published below.
The statutory consultation period has now ended. The final decision will be taken by the Council's Children and Young People's (CYP) Committee in September 2018.
