Consultation on the amalgamation of Eastfield Infant School and Westfield Junior School in St Ives
What is the proposal?
The proposal is to construct a new school, on the sites currently occupied by Eastfield and Westfield, during the period summer 2019 to summer 2020 and then amalgamate Eastfield and Westfield Schools to create one primary school with a new name which would open on 1 September 2020.
It is planned that the proposed new school would be established as a 630-place primary, this would provide an increase in the number of places in each year group from 80 to 90 places. A high level initial study has been commissioned by the Council exploring the opportunity for demolishing the existing infant and junior schools and providing all required accommodation within a new purpose built primary school. Both schools are located on large sites which would enable the new school to be constructed while continuing to use the existing buildings.
Following this consultation, the feedback from the consultation meetings and from the completed questionnaires will be analysed and considered by a working group comprised of representatives from both schools’ governing bodies. If the governing body of each of the two schools then formally decides to proceed with the amalgamation proposal, a statutory notice will be published, providing a period of further opportunity for public response.
The final decision, expected in September 2018, will rest with the Children’s and Young People’s Committee (CYP) of Cambridgeshire County Council. Subject to approval by the CYP Committee, the existing schools would close on 31 August 2020 and the new primary school would open on 1 September 2020.
The deadline for survey responses is 18 May 2018.
