Community protection projects

Community Alcohol Partnership

A Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) is a partnership of groups and individuals interested in reducing the problem of underage drinking in an area.

CAPs usually consist of the police, Trading Standards, Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT), Retail of Alcohol Standards Group (RASG), local authorities, local retailers, local schools, support services for youngsters with alcohol related problems, and local community groups.

Why CAPs

CAPs are formed where there is a concern about alcohol consumption in an area. Usually this relates to under 18s but sometimes there are concerns about adult drinking too.

What is involved

  • education - of young people, parents and retailers
  • enforcement - of the law relating to alcohol and young people
  • challenging perceptions - about young people and groups of people gathering in public places

How you can support this work

If you are aware of any alcohol related problems please contact the CAP Project Manager on 0345 045 5206 or email Trading.Standards@cambridgeshire.gov.uk.

Kick Ash

Kick Ash is an award winning countywide campaign which sees young people promoting initiatives to prevent smoking in the under 16s across Cambridgeshire. It is based in secondary schools and recruits volunteers aged 14 and 15 to work as mentors in their school and the local community. As mentors they lead on campaign activities including:

  • supporting young people vulnerable to smoking
  • working with the media and lobbying local MPs
  • preventing underage sales of tobacco
  • developing stop smoking services sensitive for young people

Kick Ash is supported by Cambridgeshire County Council's Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE), Trading Standards and Communications team and also by NHS Cambridgeshire.
