Parking and disabled access

There is no free, allocated parking for visitors at Shire Hall but there is a small pay and display car park near the front of the building.

There is disabled parking onsite and ramped access is available. Please contact the Archive in advance so you can be advised on parking and access.

The searchroom is situated on the ground floor of Shire Hall.

Access to the searchroom is free.

It is advisable to book a searchroom seat in advance as space is limited.

Visitors will need a County Archive Research Network (CARN) ticket. You can obtain this (free of charge) on your first visit by providing identification of your name and home address, such as a driving licence, gas or electricity bill or a Cambridgeshire Libraries card. Passports, National Archives reader's tickets and British Library reader's tickets are not acceptable as they do not include addresses.

There will be a £1.50 fee to replace a lost CARN ticket.

Document production

Documents can usually be produced on demand in our searchroom between 9.30 and 12:45 and 2:00 and 4:30. At particularly busy times, however, and when staffing levels are reduced, we ask for your patience and co-operation should you experience some delay in the delivery of your records.

Ordering your documents in advance, so we can have them ready for your arrival, is strongly recommended and will enable you to make more efficient use of your time with us. You can request up to six items in advance; if you order more, we will only produce the first six items on your list.

Please allow at least 24 hours’ notice to enable staff to process your order. Records held at our outstore will be produced within 10 working days.

To place your order email [email protected] or call us on 01223 699399 with the references of the documents you require, or a brief description of the material, and the date and approximate time you wish to visit. It is also helpful if you can supply a contact telephone number in case we need to discuss your order. If we are unable to produce the documents you require on the day requested, we will contact you as soon as possible to arrange another date for your visit.

Laptops can be used in the searchroom although access to power points is limited. The archives service takes no responsibility for any damage that may occur to your laptop whilst it is in use in the searchroom.

Public access computers

The searchroom has two public access computers with access to a range of websites, including our Archives online catalogue (CALM), Cambridgeshire Libraries catalogue and a variety of local and family history online sources, such as free access to Ancestry.

Group visits to the Archives

'Behind the scenes' visits to Cambridgeshire Archives can be arranged for groups on request (Mondays only). Groups will have exclusive use of the searchroom and material in the archives. For group visits there is a charge of £50 including VAT.

External talks can be given to groups and societies about the archives. If you would like to book a talk there is a charge of £65 including VAT.

Cambridgeshire Archives stocks a range of books and local reproduction maps for purchase.
