A10 / A142 Lancaster Way roundabout

Capacity improvements are currently underway to the A10 / A142 BP roundabout, required as part of the approved Lancaster Way Business Park expansion planning application in Ely.

The expansion is a vital development to support economic growth within East Cambridgeshire. It is expected to generate 2,500+ jobs, 75% from the local area.

We agreed to conduct a feasibility study, funded by the business park developer Grovemere Property, to assess the current congestion issues at the Cambridge Road, BP and Lancaster Way roundabouts.

The study identified that capacity improvements at the Lancaster Way roundabout would also unlock further benefits of the measures now being constructed at the BP roundabout. You can find more information on the feasibility study and BP roundabout works on the A10 / A142 BP roundabout page.

We have started to look at how we could make improvements to the Lancaster Way roundabout. The proposals for Lancaster Way are not directly linked to the planning agreements at the A10 / A142 BP roundabout and are additional proposals funded by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) and East Cambridgeshire District Council. They aim to maximise the benefits of the improvements to the A10 / A142 BP roundabout by further improving capacity and minimising congestion.

We are putting forward the proposed design for public consultation to give local residents and businesses the chance to offer comments for consideration. The survey will run from 27 July until 18 September 2020.

We welcome your views on the project. The survey is available to complete on our Consult Cambs website.

After the consultation

We will analyse and review comments once the consultation period has finished. We will present the outcome of the consultation and final design recommendation to the Highways and Transport Committee on 10 November 2020. Depending on the comments, and subject to committee approval, we aim to start construction in January 2021 with completion expected in spring 2021.

Proposed design

The drawing highlights the improvements to the Lancaster Way roundabout which will reduce congestion and improve capacity to support additional planned development. The design identified that by increasing the approach lanes from one to two lanes, the capacity on the roundabout itself could be increased and therefore see traffic move through the junction more efficiently. These changes include:

  • Widening of the road to accommodate two lane entries on the A142 Witchford Road arm of the roundabout
  • On Lancaster Way, the two lane approach is extended further into the business park
  • Widening the road to accommodate two lane entries on the A142 Witchford Bypass approach

Scheme funding

The Lancaster Way roundabout scheme has a budget of £800,000. This amount includes allowances for design, construction and management costs. The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) and East Cambridgeshire District Council are funding the scheme.
