The Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council, Cllr Sebastian Kindersley, said: “Today (6 June), we gathered at New Shire Hall and raised a flag to commemorate the 80th anniversary since the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944. We paused to remember, reflect, and honour the memory of those who gave their lives to defend our democratic freedoms.
“The D-Day landings were the largest seaborne invasion in history. Along with the associated airborne operations, it marked the beginning of the liberation of France and western Europe.
“We remember the sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from Britain and the Commonwealth. We pay tribute to the special contribution of families and of the emergency services and we acknowledge innocent civilians who have lost their lives in conflict and acts of terrorism.”
