Cambridgeshire County Council has been ranked as one of the top-performing authorities in the UK for the action it has taken towards Net Zero.
The Council achieved a score of 55% in the Climate Action Scorecards published by Climate Emergency UK yesterday, (Tuesday 17 June), placing it second among all comparable local authorities in England. With the score range for this group being between 20% to 64%, this is a strong result. The score marks an improvement of 11% from 2023, making Cambridgeshire County Council ‘one of the most improved county councils’, according to Climate Emergency UK.
The Climate Action Scorecard assesses more than 400 local and combined authorities across the UK - grouped by type - against a broad range of climate action criteria, including transport, buildings and heating, biodiversity, planning, governance, waste, and community engagement. As councils influence over a third of the UK’s emissions through services such as housing, transport, waste management, and land use, their role in driving climate action is essential.
The initiative is designed to promote transparency, showcase best practice, and encourage bold, evidence-based climate leadership across local authorities.
The 2025 results highlight several areas where Cambridgeshire County Council is leading the way on climate action, including:
- Buildings and heating – score: 88%
- Collaboration and engagement – score:76%
- Governance and finance – score: 55%.
Councillor Ros Hathorn, chair of the Environment and Green Investment committee, said: “This independent recognition from Climate Emergency UK is a real credit to the dedication and ambition of our teams in working towards our ambition of Net Zero carbon emissions for Cambridgeshire by 2045. It reflects the wide-ranging work we’re doing to tackle the climate crisis and deliver a more sustainable future for our county.
“From improving the energy efficiency of our own buildings, to collaborating with our partners on decarbonisation, and protecting our natural environment, we’re committed to driving positive change. We know there’s always more to do, but this excellent result shows that we’re on the right path.”
