Campaign launched to encourage more childcare professionals in Northstowe

22 November 2023

A campaign has been launched to encourage more people in Northstowe to work in childcare to meet an ever-increasing demand in the town.

The drive has been spearheaded by Cambridgeshire County Councillor for Northstowe, Cllr Firouz Thompson.

She is working with the County Council, South Cambridgeshire District Council and Northstowe Town Council to promote this key area of employment in the new town.

Cllr Thompson said: “Rewarding jobs are waiting for the right people in Northstowe. Childcare professionals are needed to support the growth of the town, to meet the needs of the children who will be born and grow up here.”

She is encouraging people living in Northstowe and the surrounding area to:

  • find out what makes childcare such a rewarding career
  • explore the different childcare roles available
  • discover the routes to becoming a childcare professional, and gain the skills and knowledge to build your own business
  • overcome barriers to finding work in this inspiring profession.

Cllr Thompson has been campaigning for an end to restrictive covenants imposed by some housebuilders on certain new properties which prohibits people living in them from running businesses from home, including childcare.

The County Council’s partnership work is seeking to create a network of childcare and early education professionals in Northstowe. To make this happen, the authority has arranged a drop-in session at the community centre to learn more about what childcare is, and training opportunities for people interested in becoming early years practitioners or educators.

Council staff will be at the Northstowe market on Sunday 26 November and in the Community Centre on Tuesday 28 November to answer questions about working in early years.
