Consultation opens on proposed A10 road crossing

22 January 2025

Residents are being invited to have their say about a proposed new crossing of the A10 bypass, to the southwest of Ely, where it connects with the A142 Witchford Road.

A public consultation on the proposals opens today, Wednesday 22 January 2025 from 12.00pm midday, and closes at 11.59pm on Wednesday 5 March 2025.

The A10 is the main road connecting Ely and Witchford in East Cambridgeshire, providing connections to the Lancaster Way Business Park and wider destinations along the A142/Witchford Road corridor. The existing crossing is not controlled by traffic signals over the A10 on the northern side of the ‘BP roundabout’, making it difficult for those looking to cross this busy road. This project provides an opportunity to make significant improvements to road safety and encourage walking, wheeling and cycling in the local area.

The proposals include two bridge options and one signal crossing option, each with different design features, benefits and costs. As an active travel route, the new crossing would be designed for walking, cycling and travelling by wheelchair or mobility aids.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority is funding the project and Cambridgeshire County Council is responsible for delivering the scheme.

The consultation findings will help inform a future decision to be made by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority and Cambridgeshire County Council regarding the preferred option to be taken forward.

Cllr Alex Beckett, chair of the Highways and Transport Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “Listening to local people, we know how difficult it can be to cross the A10 these days when walking, cycling or wheeling. The aim of the proposals being consulted on is to improve road safety for people crossing including vulnerable users, older people and those with disabilities. The new crossing would connect the local community and give people more options for getting around, by making short journeys without the car easier and safer. I encourage everyone to share your feedback and help us create safer and more accessible infrastructure in Ely, Witchford, and the surrounding area.”

Dr Nik Johnson, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: "The proposed crossing of the A10 represents a vital step forward in making our communities safer, healthier, and more connected. By enabling safer and more accessible options for walking, cycling, and wheeling, we can reduce car dependency, encourage active travel, and improve the quality of life for residents in Ely, Witchford, and beyond. I strongly encourage everyone to take part in the consultation and share their views, as your feedback will help shape a solution that works for all of us."
