Families can ‘Get Activated’ with a summer of free or low cost activities

Families across Cambridgeshire can gear up for a summer of fun, with organisations joining forces to promote a range of enjoyable and healthy activities across the county.

The countywide campaign, Get Activated, is packed with free or low-cost activities to keep the whole family entertained throughout the summer months at a time when many household budgets are stretched.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of activities run by the county and district councils and other partner organisations that families can take part in. There will be many varied types of activities including opportunities for play, cycling, walking, sports and cultural and community events to keep families having fun and busy. They can also take part in the Cambridgeshire Libraries Summer Reading Challenge and ‘The Library Presents’ programme of arts events is especially rich in music for adults and families through July and August.

To be in with a chance of winning a £50 or £25 runner up supermarket voucher, take part in the #LetsGetOutdoors photographic competition being run by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Parks Partnership. Residents are invited to share images or videos in a local park or space with the theme ‘embracing the sun’. Cambridgeshire County Council is also coordinating the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, which offers free holiday scheme places to primary and secondary school children eligible for benefit-related free school meals. As part of the programme, eligible children will be able to access:

  • Fun and entertaining play opportunities and enriching experiences that help children to develop their skills and knowledge and keep physically active.
  • A nutritional meal each day.
  • Guidance on increasing awareness of healthy eating, lifestyles, and positive behaviours.

Cllr Bryony Goodliffe, Chair of the Children and Young People Committee said “One of our key ambitions is to ensure that children and young people have the opportunity to thrive in our county and this campaign is a great way for us to raise awareness of the numerous free or low cost activities that families can access.

“There really is something for everyone, from recycling open days to checking out a new walking route, recipe or finding a local sports activity, we’d encourage everyone to take advantage of what’s on offer and we hope it will also encourage more people to get out and about to help improve both physical and mental health.”

The Get Activated campaign is supported by Cambridgeshire County Council, District and City Councils and Living Sport.
