Have your say on the future of local government for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough

05 February 2026

Residents across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are being invited to take part in a landmark Government consultation that will help determine the future shape of local government in the area.

The Government is running a consultation seeking views on a number of options made by councils across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

The options would replace the current county, district and city council arrangements with new unitary authorities. This would mean residents would deal with a single council responsible for delivering all local government services in their area, rather than services being split across different councils.

The consultation includes a range of options submitted by county, city and district councils across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Cllr Lucy Nethsingha, Leader of Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape what works best for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. LGR is emotive and views differ - this really matters - so we need as many people and organisations as possible to respond.”

The consultation is running from today (Thursday, 5 February) to 26 March 2026. Now that it’s open, people are able to view the options and submit their views online.

Residents can use free computers, Wi-Fi and internet access at Cambridgeshire libraries, support is available to get online. Printed versions of the consultation will also be available at libraries.
