Little Paxton Bridge to reopen

22 October 2024

Little Paxton Bridge, Mill Lane, St Neots, is due to reopen this weekend, after repairs to the road surface have been completed.

The bridge has been closed due to extensive damage caused by recent heavy flooding of the River Great Ouse.

Mill Lane was completely submerged under fast moving floodwater for a number of days, with the old cobbled road underneath left exposed after parts of the road surface were ripped away.

It was necessary to allow time for the road to dry out before investigations could be carried out, these are now complete and repairs will be taking place. Work will start on Thursday and be finished before the weekend, weather permitting.

The old surface will be removed, and a new road surface will be laid on the existing concrete beneath – to achieve a deeper, more substantial repair. A new kerb line has also been installed to further increase flood resilience.

Cllr Alex Beckett, chair of the Highways and Transport Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “It’s frustrating that flooding at Little Paxton Bridge, Mill Lane has been more serious than usual this year and resulted in extensive damage to the road surface on two occasions.

“While we can’t control the weather, I’m pleased to hear that it’s been possible to design a repair that will both improve future flood resilience and also allow the road to be safely opened shortly. Thank you for your patience.”
