The speed limit will be reduced on the Guided Busway at Histon as part of the county council’s ongoing commitment to ensure its safe operation.
We have lowered the speed limit from 50mph to 30mph on a one-and-a-half-mile section of the busway. This will come into force between Pagram Way to Park Lane crossing, the section from Histon to the crossroads with Oakington.
This is part of our ongoing commitment to further strengthen the Guided Busway’s safety arrangements. The speed limit reduction will enable potential risks we have identified with pedestrians crossing to be further reduced, in advance of installing new safety fencing and signage on this section.
The new speed limit will not adversely impact journey times, and the bus operators have been instructed. We will be monitoring compliance with our dedicated busway safety team.
Last month, the Highways and Transport Committee agreed to further safety improvements on the Guided Busway. The additional safety measures build upon the council’s full acceptance of historical failures relating to the busway, as part of the recent court case. The council was clear that following the sentence received, lessons had been learned, the busway safety regime had changed and there would be further improvements going forward. This new and robust regime includes a programme of comprehensive risk assessments and a team of dedicated officers focussing on the safety of the busway.
As a result of this enhanced regime and comprehensive programme of risk assessments, further safety improvements are being worked on, including installing a fence or barriers along the whole of the Guided Busway, and options to help with the flooding on sections of the path which run alongside the busway.
