New chapter begins as Fenstanton Community Hall opens its doors

05 October 2026

Fenstanton Community Hall was opened to residents (September 30), marking the completion of a major community project more than six years in the making.

The new facility on Crest Drive fits with the council's ambition to encourage full, healthy lives for all and its priority to support stronger ties in the community. The project was made possible through partnership funding, including a £500,000 contribution from Cambridgeshire County Council, alongside Fenstanton Parish Council, Huntingdonshire District Council and the Fenstanton Village Hall Trust.

The opening represents more than just a new building. It creates a welcoming space where residents can meet, take part in activities and build connections with others. This is particularly important as Cambridgeshire County Council's Quality of Life Survey continues to highlight loneliness and social isolation as significant issues for some residents across the county.

Designed as a modern, fully accessible community space, the hall will provide facilities for residents of all ages and interests. Features include a large multi-purpose hall for sports, performances and community events, a kitchen, flexible meeting and social space, an IT hub, and accommodation for the parish council.

The project comes at an important time for Fenstanton, which has grown significantly in recent years but has seen a reduction in some of its community facilities.

Peter McDonald, Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council, said: "Community spaces like this can be truly transformational. We know from our Quality of Life Survey that loneliness remains an important issue for many people, and places where residents can come together, take part in activities and build relationships are more valuable than ever.

"Cambridgeshire County Council has been proud to support this project over a number of years, from providing £500,000 in funding to helping bring partners together to make it happen. The new hall is a great example of what can be achieved through collaboration, creating a lasting resource that will benefit residents for many years to come."

The county council's investment helped unlock the wider funding package needed to bring the project to life, creating a long-term community asset that will support wellbeing, reduce social isolation and provide opportunities for residents to come together.

Kevin Forbes Mitchell, Trustee of the Fenstanton Village Hall Trust, said: "After more than six years of planning, fundraising and seeing the building grow from an idea into reality, it's fantastic to finally open the doors. We've already seen huge interest from local groups and residents.

"The hall has been designed as a place for everyone, whether that's attending a fitness class, joining a book club, using the digital hub, coming to a community event or simply dropping in for a coffee and a chat. We hope it becomes a real hub for village life and a place where people can connect and enjoy spending time together."

The hall will host a wide range of activities, from table tennis, bowls and martial arts to music, drama, weddings, exhibitions and business events, helping to meet growing demand for accessible community space in the village.

Martin, a Fenstanton resident, said: "This is an amazing achievement for the village and a real testament to everyone who worked so hard to make it happen. The hall brings together so many of the things local people have been asking for and provides a fantastic central space for the community.

"There is already a great range of activities taking place here, from bowls and Tai Chi to classes and social events, and I think people of all ages will benefit from it. It's something the whole village has been looking forward to, and it's wonderful to see it finally open."

The new building is expected to become a focal point for village life, giving residents more opportunities to connect, access local services, participate in activities and build stronger community relationships.
