New fencing will start to be implemented along the Guided Busway from next month (October).
Following risk assessments to improve safety along the busway, a permanent fence was installed on the southern section of the busway in April 2024 between Cambridge Railway Station and Long Road bridge. After approval at the Highways and Transport Committee in June, a programme is now being implemented to install fencing and barriers across the whole Guided Busway.
The first phase of the new fencing will be on the remaining southern section between Trumpington and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
Work will begin in early October and involve installing almost 3km of fencing between the busway and the maintenance track, the path which runs alongside the busway.
Advanced warning signs will be displayed this week to advise of the works and planned closures – one lane of the busway will be closed along with the path which runs alongside the busway. This is required to create a safe working area for our contractors to install the new fence.
To reduce inconvenience to bus passengers, cyclists and pedestrians and keep the Guided Busway and the maintenance track open wherever possible, the work will take place in sections. The path which runs alongside the busway, will be closed in phases to align with where the fencing is being installed. A phasing plan is currently being finalised with our contractors, and further details will be provided before the works begin.
Design works for the northern section of fencing and options to help with the flooding are currently in progress. This section requires detailed ecological and design considerations as well as public engagement and discussions with key stakeholders before these works commence.
These works are part of the County Council’s commitment to health and safety on the Guided Busway.
Whilst work is taking place, we’d like to remind people they must not trespass on the busway, and they must keep to the maintenance track or formal crossing points for their own safety.
