Repairs to begin on Milton Road sinkhole

10 July 2026

Work to repair the Milton Road sinkhole is scheduled to start on Tuesday (14 July), following further collaboration with Anglian Water.

Our contractors will pour concrete into the sinkhole to create a slab. We then need to wait several days for the concrete slab to dry out and harden before our contractors can return to excavate the area around the sinkhole and backfill the hole.

Digging out and filling in the hole – which is the size of a family car – will take several more days to complete, allowing again for time to dry out. This is also due to the need to work sensitively around utilities in the road and avoid loss of services to local residents. The area will then be resurfaced and the road reopened.

Given the unique nature of the works we are currently unable to confirm the reopening date. A further update will be provided once more information is available.

Milton Road between Hurst Avenue and the Elizabeth Way roundabout continues to be accessible for those on foot or bike and we will reopen the road to motor vehicles as soon as it is safe to do so.

We appreciate that the closure has caused disruption to travel across the north of the city and we would like to thank the local community for their continued patience during this unusual road closure.
