River Cam footbridges – update

23 May 2024

Jesus Green Lock footbridge will reopen from 4pm today (Thursday 23 May) following a structural inspection by council engineers.

After being temporarily closed on Tuesday, bridge surveys were carried out on Wednesday by the council, and we are satisfied the concerns with the lock islands do not pose an issue for the bridge structures and it is safe to re-open Jesus Green Lock footbridge. It will be monitored on a weekly basis.

As for Baits Bite Lock footbridge, we’re continuing to work with partners to assess if the lock island does pose an issue to the footbridge. Until then, the footbridge will remain temporarily closed as we have a duty to ensure the safety of our paths and highways. We will reopen the bridge as soon as we are satisfied with its safety.

The decision to temporarily close both bridges as a precaution came about after the Conservators of the River Cam’s survey revealed structural issues with the lock islands in both Cambridge and Milton locations.

Alternative pedestrian routes for Baits Bite Lock footbridge are Clayhithe Road bridge or the Abbey-Chesterton footbridge.

Diversion signage is in place to advise pedestrians of alternative routes.
