Second public consultation opens on A141 and St Ives improvements scheme

08 October 2025

Residents are being invited to have their say on a package of proposals to improve the A141 and introduce new active travel and public transport routes in the St Ives and Huntingdon areas.

This second public consultation on the A141 and St Ives Improvements Scheme opens from 12.00pm midday today (Wednesday, 8 October) and closes at 11.59pm on Wednesday, 19 November 2025.

The latest proposals build on public feedback from the first consultation, which took place in October and November 2024. They include ways to further enhance active travel infrastructure and improve bus routes, and additional measures to address road congestion and improve overall road capacity around St Ives.

The A141 is a critical part of the Huntingdonshire transport infrastructure but is frequently congested and doesn’t have enough off-road cycling, walking facilities or public transport options. This leads to road safety issues, poor noise and air quality and drivers ‘rat-running’ through villages on minor roads. Further housing developments and economic growth will put extra pressure on local infrastructure.

To address congestion, ease traffic in town centres and enable growth, the scheme proposes new active travel routes for walking, cycling and wheeling; new public transport services; and a range of road measures, including the development of a bypass. The proposals aim to enhance both the A141 and the network around Huntingdon and St Ives.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority is leading on the scheme and Cambridgeshire County Council is responsible for its delivery.

To find out more about the latest scheme proposals and ask questions, residents are being invited to a series of events:

Throughout the consultation, residents can also visit an exhibition in the reception of New Shire Hall, Emery Crescent, Enterprise Campus, Alconbury Weald, Huntingdon PE28 4YE between 9am and 4pm.

The consultation findings will help inform any future decisions made by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority and Cambridgeshire County Council regarding the proposals to be taken forward.

Cllr Robin Wyatt, vice chair of the Highways and Transport Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “We received widespread feedback through the first public consultation on our proposals for modernising the highways networks, connecting communities, unlocking growth and enhancing our public transport, cycling, walking and safer travel infrastructure. We have responded to the feedback and updated the proposals.

“We’re now asking residents to let us know once again what they think about the updated package of active travel, public transport and road improvements so we can finalise a range of solutions and move on to the next phase of the scheme.”

Paul Bristow, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: “This is about giving local people a say in shaping a transport network that actually works for them, one that keeps traffic moving, improves safety, and supports how people want to travel today. The A141 is a vital route for residents and businesses across Huntingdonshire, but it’s long been held back by congestion and limited options for walking, cycling and public transport. By listening carefully to what people tell us, we can deliver improvements that ease pressure on the road, connect communities more effectively, and help the area grow in a resilient way.”

Cllr Sam Wakeford, Executive Councillor for Economy, Regeneration and Housing at Huntingdonshire District Council, said: "A141 improvements are essential for Huntingdonshire. They will reduce congestion, improve journey times and increase safety - and be good for residents’ quality of life, help strengthen our local economy, support local businesses, and attract new investment. We encourage as many people as possible take part in the consultation to ensure your views help shape these important changes for our district.”

More than 56,000 households and businesses in the St Ives and Huntingdon area are being sent information about the consultation.

Leaflets and posters are also available in the St Ives Library, Huntingdon Library and Archives, Warboys Library and via the Huntingdonshire Mobile Library service as well as at community centres.
