Statement from the County Returning Officer: Roman Bank and Peckover County Council Division By-Election

17 June 2026

Cambridgeshire County Council’s Chief Executive, Dr Stephen Moir, who is also the County Returning Officer has been advised by Fenland District Council elections officers about a recent social media statement made by Jonathon Lilley, a candidate standing in the Cambridgeshire County Council by-election for the Roman Bank and Peckover county division, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday 25 June 2026.

In the social media statement, Mr Lilley expressed a desire to stand down as a candidate. However, he has subsequently been advised that once the statutory deadline for the withdrawal of candidates has passed, any individual who has been validly nominated remains an official candidate in the election.

In accordance with electoral law, there is no legal basis in this case to amend or remove a candidate’s name from the ballot paper, or from any formal election documentation. All published and forthcoming election materials will therefore remain unchanged and will include references to Mr Lilley.

Fenland District Council, with the agreement of the County Returning Officer, has written to Mr Lilley to confirm this position and will continue to administer the election, on behalf of Cambridgeshire County Council, in accordance with all relevant statutory requirements.
