Stay warm, healthy, and well-prepared with Be Winter Wise

01 November 2024

Be Winter Wise and Olly the Owl return for the winter season, helping Cambridgeshire residents to keep warm, safe and healthy throughout the colder months.

Aligned with the county council’s vision of a greener, fairer and more caring Cambridgeshire, the campaign will focus on preventing winter illnesses, coping with the cost of living and staying safe during the winter weather. It will provide practical help and guidance to help residents navigate the issues that face so many people at this time of year.

The Cambridgeshire County Council led campaign will have advice on:

  • Help with the cost of living such as warm hubs and Pension Credit (financial support for people over the State Pension age and on a low income)
  • Ways to protect your health, for example making sure you have any vaccinations you are eligible for
  • Tips on how to heat your home efficiently
  • Where to find free, physical activities for all the family across Cambridgeshire this winter
  • Advice on how to prepare for extreme weather conditions, such as freezing temperatures and flooding
  • Winter gritting schedules and staying safe on our roads, particularly when it's cold and dark.

Councillor Elisa Meschini, Deputy Leader of Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “We understand that winter can be a difficult time for many of our residents. The Be Winter Wise campaign is a way of giving everyone access to the information and resources they need to stay well, warm and well-prepared for the months ahead.

“Cold weather, money worries and health issues are often closely linked. This is why the campaign covers everything from energy saving tips and how to find warm spaces near to you, to preventing seasonal illnesses and maintaining and improving your mental health.”

Cllr Tom Sanderson said: “We know how concerned people in Cambridgeshire are about the rising cost of living just now – this campaign will have a wealth of useful information about cost-of-living support, for example, how to claim Pension Credit for those above State Pension age and on a low income.

“We’ll explain how to claim supermarket vouchers for children eligible for free school meals during the school holidays, and we’ll be signposting to information from our partner organisations who provide essential winter support.

“In addition, we’ll continue to let people know about low or no-cost winter activities to boost mental and physical health – so make sure you keep an eye out for our social media posts featuring our campaign motif Olly the Owl!”
