Work starting on March junction improvements

30 January 2026

Works are due to start on Monday (9 February 2026), on safety improvements at two junctions in March, Cambridgeshire.

The A141 March Road/Twenty Foot Road junction is being relocated and upgraded with the installation of traffic lights on new traffic islands, a right turn lane for those joining Twenty Foot Road and resurfacing as well as new signs and lining.

Works to upgrade the signalised junction at St Peter’s Road, March include creating a new right turn lane on the B1101, The Causeway approach, resurfacing, cycle boxes at each arm of the junction and two new tactile toucan crossings for pedestrians and cyclists. This upgrade aims to enhance safety for drivers and cyclists whilst improving the flow of traffic. Preparatory works will take place during the Easter holidays and May half term, with most of the works timed to take place during the quieter summer holidays to reduce disruption to drivers travelling around the town centre.

These projects are both part of the March Area Transport Study and follow on from works completed on Broad Street and the town centre in 2024. The total cost of the junction improvements and resurfacing is estimated to be around £4m. The A141/Twenty Foot Road work is anticipated to take around nine months with the St Peter’s Road works due to be completed by September.

To ensure a safe working area for our staff to carry out the works, temporary traffic lights will be used during some of the works at both locations. When temporary traffic lights are needed on the A141 during morning peak times, they will be manned in person to reduce hold ups and ensure the best possible flow of traffic. There is no access to Twenty Foot Road from the A141 for the duration of the works.

Work at St Peter’s Road junction, which is well used by those travelling to the nearby Neal-Wade Academy, has been carefully planned to make best use of the quieter school holiday times. In both locations, the aim is to keep the need for temporary traffic lights at a minimum to reduce the impact of the roadworks on drivers and to keep traffic flowing around the town.

Cllr Alex Beckett, Chair of the Highways and Transport Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “Putting in signals at these busy junctions will help improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers where accidents have happened in the past. These two schemes are just part of our wider investment in March which aims to make it easier for everyone to get around as the town grows.”

The public can keep up-to-date with information about the junction improvement works via the County Council’s webpage: March Transport Study | Cambridgeshire County Council.

The works are being carried out by Cambridgeshire County Council and are funded by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority.
