Visiting our searchrooms
Visitors are advised to book in advance. This allows our staff time to identify the most relevant records for your research and retrieve them from our strongrooms. By doing so, they will be ready for you as soon as you arrive.
We ask that documents are ordered in advance, up to a maximum of eight per session.
Please email the relevant archives team at least two working days in advance with the document references you require or a brief description of the material. Also include the date and time you wish to visit. We will contact you as soon as possible to confirm your booking or to arrange an alternative date if necessary.
Archives card
We are part of the ARA’s Archive Card scheme so we ask that you register for an Archives Card at ArchivesCard.com before your visit. These are free of charge and valid for five years. You will be asked to bring in two of the forms of ID when you visit so we can complete the process and issue your card.
