Empowering local action on flood risk
Is your community working hard to reduce the risk of flooding? Do you have a community flood group or parish council with a working party ready to make a difference?
If so, you could be eligible for a community watercourse maintenance grant of up to £10,000.
Grants are designed to support communities where the condition of local watercourses is increasing the risk of flooding.
By providing funding directly to communities in Cambridgeshire, we are enabling local people to take practical steps to improve water flow, reduce flood risk, and enhance the local environment. This grant helps communities take ownership of their flood resilience.
What can the grant be used for?
- Vegetation clearance and debris removal
- Minor repairs to banks or channels
- Equipment hire or contractor support
- Volunteer training and safety equipment
- Other essential maintenance activities
Who can apply?
- Community flood groups with a clear plan for action
- Parish councils with a flood group working party
Are there any restrictions?
Grants are only available where:
- The riparian owner is unknown or unable to carry out maintenance
- Riparian ownership is complex, making coordination of appropriate maintenance very difficult, potentially increasing flood risk. For example, needing to involve multiple landowners who have different responsibilities along a single watercourse.
What is the closing date for applications?
Grant funding will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications will remain open until all available funds have been allocated. We encourage interested applicants to apply as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
How will my application be scored?
You can view our scoring criteria below
What else do I need to know?
If your application is successful, you will need to enter into a grant agreement with Cambridgeshire County Council. A blank version of the grant agreement is available for you to view below.
You will need to be able to demonstrate you hold the appropriate insurances outlined in the grant agreement. In the past, flood groups that don't hold insurance have found it helpful to collaborate with their parish council.
