As we approach the end of 2025, I wanted to reflect on the community spirit that defines Cambridgeshire, which I am privileged to see every week at New Shire Hall as we welcome new citizens. These citizenship ceremonies are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the diversity that enriches our county. I was delighted that BBC Look East accepted my invitation to join me at these ceremonies earlier this month to meet some of our newest citizens.
I know that many residents still face challenges from the rising cost of living; as a council we remain committed to supporting all the people of Cambridgeshire by continuing to strengthen our services and working closely with our partners to help people out of poverty and income inequality.
Our vision for the future is to support a greener, fairer and more caring Cambridgeshire. In the coming year we will continue to focus on reducing inequalities, improving health outcomes, and accelerating climate action to create a county where everyone can thrive.
Looking ahead to 2026, we will be drawing closer to one of the most significant changes in local government history, in the form of Local Government Reorganisation. This will be the biggest transformation that county and district councils have undertaken for more than 50 years. It represents a unique opportunity to enable inclusive growth, better public services and stronger communities.
As we work toward these longer-term goals, the council remains focused on taking practical steps to support residents through the colder months with our Be Winter Wise campaign, which offers advice on how to stay warm, safe, and well through the colder months. You can follow this campaign on social media with the hashtag #BeWinterWise - you can also find out more on our website: Be Winter Wise | Cambridgeshire County Council
Finally, I’d like to thank our communities, colleagues and partners for all their hard work, dedication and support throughout 2025.
I wish you and your loved ones a very happy festive period and New Year.
Cllr Peter McDonald, Chair of Cambridgeshire County Council
