New fencing will start to be installed along the Guided Busway from Sunday, 12 October.
Last month, we announced the first phase of the new fencing will be on the remaining southern section between Trumpington and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. This work is to improve safety along the busway.
The work will start on Sunday, 12 October, at Long Road Bridge. Our contractors will be focussing on the first 300m, working seven days a week to get this work completed as quickly as possible. It will involve digging for foundations and installing posts, panels and emergency gates.
To reduce inconvenience to bus passengers, cyclists and pedestrians and keep the Guided Busway and the maintenance track, the path which runs alongside the busway, open wherever possible, the work will take place in sections. This first section at Long Road bridge means one lane of the busway will be closed along with the path which runs alongside the busway.
We have been working hard, in partnership with the bus operators and our contractors, to ensure that new fencing is installed in the best way. As a result, we’ve made changes to the way we’re carrying out the work to minimise the disruption by installing the fencing with one lane of the busway remaining open.
The buses will be running as normal southbound, from the train station towards the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. It will be closed northbound. Please visit our website for more details. We’d urge passengers to plan their journeys and allow extra time as there will be disruption during the works.
Design work for the fencing of the northern section and options to help with the flooding is currently in progress. This section requires detailed ecological and design considerations as well as public engagement and discussions with key stakeholders before these works commence.
In June, the Highways and Transport Committee agreed to further safety improvements on the Guided Busway. These additional measures build on the County Council’s commitment to health and safety on the busway.
Whilst work is taking place, we’d like to remind people they must not trespass on the busway, and they must keep to the maintenance track or formal crossing points for their own safety.
