Overview
The County Council is making a series of safety improvements along the Guided Busway. Following approval by the Highways and Transport Committee in June 2025, plans are in place to roll out fencing and safety barriers across the entire busway network.
Programme of work
The following pages provide details on the phased works plan of improvements. We will include our on-going safety work, planned maintenance and work progress.
Northern section
Northern Guided Busway improvements information relates to the stretch of network from Cambridge North to St Ives Park & Ride (including the Orchard Park spur).
Southern section
Southern Guided Busway improvements information relates to the stretch of network from Trumpington Park & Ride to Cambridge Rail Station (including the Addenbrooke's spur).

Temporary speed reductions on the Guided Busway
From Monday 6 October 2025, a temporary speed limit reduction was introduced along the entire Guided Busway track. The speed limit has been lowered to 30mph for all buses using the busway and 20mph at crossing points. This speed limit is a temporary measure which will be in place until permanent fencing and barriers are installed. Work to install fencing between the Busway and the maintenance track is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The speed limit will be reviewed as each section of fencing is completed.
A 15mph limit speed limit has been introduced on the maintenance track, the path used by riders, cyclists and pedestrians which runs alongside the busway. Motorcycles are not permitted to use the track, and electric bikes that exceed 15mph are no longer be permitted. These restrictions are being implemented in partnership with the police.
A commitment to safety
These improvements are part of the County Council’s commitment to health and safety on the Guided Busway. We would remind people that trespassing on the busway is strictly prohibited, and that they must keep to the maintenance track or formal crossing points for their own safety. Trespassing on the busway tracks is an offence and the County Council reserve the right to take enforcement action.
Equality Impact
Equality Impact Assessments (EqIAs) are a tool we use to make evidence-based decisions about how we work. We have prepared an Equality Impact Assessment to support the decisions made on the fencing project.
Upcoming events
Histon and Impington public meeting
Following the local survey and stakeholder engagement, we anticipate creating a new formal crossing at the Community Orchard. A new crossing in this location was the most popular choice with both stakeholders and those responding to the survey.
We’re inviting residents of Histon and Impington to attend a further drop-in event on Tuesday 9 June, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, at Histon Baptist Church.
This public meeting in Histon and Impington will provide a further update about the safety improvements we’re undertaking along the busway, including plans for the new crossing at Histon Orchard.
