Overview

The County Council is rolling out a series of safety improvements along the Guided Busway. Following approval by the Highways and Transport Committee in June 2025, plans are in place to roll out fencing and safety barriers across the entire busway network.

Planned programme of work

The information here provides details on the phased works plan of improvements.

The upcoming phase will focus on the southern stretch of the busway, specifically between Trumpington and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Nearly three kilometres of fencing will be installed between the busway and the adjacent maintenance track.

New fencing will start to be installed along the Guided Busway from Sunday, 12 October.

This work will start at Long Road Bridge. Our contractors will be focussing on the first 300m, working seven days a week to get this work completed as quickly as possible. It will involve digging for foundations and installing posts, panels and emergency gates.

To reduce inconvenience for bus passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians, the work will take place in sections. This helps keep the Guided Busway and maintenance track open wherever possible.

This first section at Long Road bridge means one lane of the busway will be closed along with the path which runs alongside the busway. The buses will be running as normal southbound, from the train station towards the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. It will be closed northbound and buses travelling north will be diverted on the road.

Histon

From Monday 13 October until Friday 7 November there will be a full closure of the busway and the maintenance track between Gatehouse Road and Station Road in Histon. This will be in place between 9.30am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, whilst works are carried out to install fencing next to the busway. This will be installed between the St Audrey’s Close crossing and the Hain Daniels factory.

Cambridge-bound buses will be diverted off the busway at Gatehouse Road Histon and they will rejoin at the Station Road/Cambridge Road junction, Histon. St Ives-bound buses will follow the reverse routes. A temporary bus stop will be in place, for the northbound service it will be outside the Station House café on Station Road, Histon. For southbound services it will be the usual Histon busway stop.

In August, we announced the lower speed limit on the Guided Busway at Histon. As part of this, we said the speed limit reduction would enable potential risks we have identified with pedestrians crossing to be further reduced. In advance of the new fencing being installed along the whole of the Guided Busway, we will be closing off a few undesignated crossing points which are being used.

This was explained to residents at a public meeting. We understand people’s frustrations about the fencing, but people must keep to the formal crossing points for their own safety. We are committed to engaging with the community on the future of safe crossing points and will continue to hold public meetings to discuss this. There will be a drop-in event on Tuesday, 21 October from 5pm until 8.30pm at Histon Baptist Church.

Temporary speed reduction on the Guided Busway

From Monday 6 October, a temporary speed limit reduction will be introduced along the entire Guided Busway. The speed limit will be lowered to 30mph along the busway and 20mph at crossing points. This is temporary until permanent fencing and barriers are installed, with the work expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The speed limit will be revised as each section of fencing is completed.

A 15mph limit speed limit will apply on the maintenance track, the path which runs alongside the busway. Motorcycles will be banned from the track, and electric bikes that exceed 15mph will no longer be permitted. These restrictions are being implemented in partnership with the police.

A commitment to safety

These improvements are part of the County Council’s commitment to health and safety on the Guided Busway. Whilst work is taking place, we’d like to remind people they must not trespass on the busway, and they must keep to the maintenance track or formal crossing points for their own safety.

Cambridge Railway Station and Long Road fence

A permanent fence was added between Cambridge Railway Station and Long Road bridge following detailed safety reviews.

Speed limit reduction Histon

As part of our evolving safety programme, the speed limit on a section of the Guided Busway at Histon has been permanently reduced from 50mph to 30mph.

  • Location: From Pagram Way to Park Lane crossing (Histon to the Oakington crossroads)
  • Length: Approximately 1.5 miles
  • Reason: To reduce risk to pedestrians crossing the track in advance of planned fencing and signage upgrade
