Following an extended warning period for drivers to get used to the new layout, fines at the Mill Road bridge bus gate will come into effect from tomorrow, Tuesday 11 March.

In December 2024, the council announced a phased approach to the bus gate restriction, to allow people time to get used to it and encourage drivers not to travel over the bridge.

Although the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) has been in place since December, the period up to the end of January was used as an extended warning period only and in February, warning notices were sent. Now, from tomorrow (Tuesday, 11 March), fines will be issued for any drivers of non-exempt vehicles who drive over the bridge.

Cllr Neil Shailer, vice-chair of the Highways and Transport Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “Since last year, we have been doing a phased approach to the Mill Road bridge bus gate restriction. This was to allow people time to get used to it and encourage drivers not to drive over the bridge.

“We’re now moving to the next stage, if a vehicle is not exempt, a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) may be issued to the registered keeper of the vehicle. If a vehicle has not applied for an exemption and receives a PCN, the registered keeper of the vehicle can make a representation using the details on the Penalty Charge Notice, and also apply for an exemption on our website.

“Nobody wants to be fining people, which is why we introduced the restriction in a measured way.”

The restriction over the bridge will be implemented as a bus gate and those vehicles that are exempt, such as those being driven by blue badge holders, will need to register for exemption via an application form online, which is available on the council’s website. More information including the exemption criteria and operational guidance document is available on our website.

Longer term public realm improvements are anticipated for Mill Road, subject to funding and further local engagement.
