New virtual smart flat to help people stay independent for longer

06 May 2026

Would you like to find out more about technology that can help you, a family member or friend to stay independent at home for longer?

Cambridgeshire County Council has launched a ‘virtual smart flat’ which uses Extended Reality (XR) to showcase ways in which new and existing technology can be used to help prevent, delay and reduce the need for formal community or acute care.

Residents are invited to explore the technology available at a launch event at New Shire Hall, Alconbury Weald, on Tuesday 12 May, from 1pm-4pm.

The event will provide an opportunity for people to meet the Technology Enabled Care service involved, ask questions, and use the XR headsets to see the range of equipment and technology the smart flat has to offer.

The equipment available ranges from simple pill reminders to sophisticated detectors, sensors, smart devices and trackers.

Councillor Luis Navarro, Vice-Chair of the Adults and Health committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “Technology enabled care is transforming the way we support people across Cambridgeshire, and contributing to our commitment to enabling full and healthy lives for all our residents.

“By giving residents smart, responsive tools that help them manage daily tasks and stay connected, we’re enabling more people to live safely and independently in their own homes for longer — and we know people are happier and healthier when they can remain part of their communities.

“I’d recommend that anyone who feels that this assistive technology would support a family member, friend or even themselves, to stay independent at home, comes along to this event to find out more about the innovative equipment available.”

If you wish to attend, we ask that you confirm your attendance in advance, due to there being a limited number of XR headsets available. You can book your place by contacting our TEC team, either by phone, on 01480 378 160, or email: TECS@cambridgeshire.gov.uk.

People will also be able to access the virtual smart flat from home, on a desktop computer or tablet, from Wednesday 13 May.

The Council also has a ‘Smart Flat’ in Huntingdon where you can try out the available equipment and technology.
