Children can get crafty this summer by signing up to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.
The theme of ‘Marvellous Makers’ aims to fire up children’s imagination and unleash storytelling and creativity through the power of reading. The Challenge is free to take part in and is open to pre-school and primary school aged children of all reading abilities.
Children can sign up at their local (or mobile) library. To complete the Challenge, they will need to read six library books of their choice during the holidays - this includes listening to audio books or being read to for young children not yet able to read independently.
Children have until Saturday 14 September to complete the Challenge. When they finish, they will receive a certificate and medal, with a special sticker medal for under 3s.
To celebrate this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, creative and craft-based activities and events will be taking place across Cambridgeshire’s libraries throughout the summer holidays. To find out what’s happening at your nearest library go to Library Live | What's On.
Councillor Tom Sanderson, Chair of the Cambridgeshire County Council’s Communities, Social Mobility and Inclusion Committee, said: “One of our key ambitions is to ensure that children and young people have the opportunity to thrive in our county, and our libraries play a vital role in achieving this. At the heart of their local communities, and with an enormous range of books to borrow and free activities, libraries support our young people as they grow and learn.
“The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic way to maintain children’s reading over the school summer holidays when reading levels can sometimes dip. I’m sure everyone who takes part will have great fun this summer as they develop their reading skills and enjoy the many fun, free activities on offer.”
The Summer Reading Challenge is just one element of a range of fun family activities taking place across Cambridgeshire this summer. Our countywide campaign, Get Activated, is packed with free or low-cost activities to keep the whole family entertained throughout the summer months at a time when many household budgets are stretched.
