Achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2045, in line with the Council’s ambitions, will involve rethinking how we use energy. This includes the way we generate and consume electricity, heat our homes and fuel our vehicles.

The UK has already made great progress in decarbonising electricity generation. In 2023 just over 60% of the UK’s electricity came from low carbon sources (Digest of UK Energy Statistics, Chapter 5 pdf). The electricity grid will need to be fully decarbonised over the coming years.

This creates opportunities for communities to develop their own energy projects. Examples like the Reach Community Solar Farm and Gamlingay Community Wind Turbine show how these projects can generate revenue for communities. New contracts can also allow community energy projects to supply cheaper electricity to local residents.

Communities can also help people:

  • improve energy efficiency at home
  • install renewable systems
  • take advantage of Government grants.

Find out how the Council can help communities start their own energy projects or promote domestic retrofits. Read more in our Community Energy Action Plan.
