Building a Greener Future for Our County
Trees are vital. As some of the biggest plants on the planet, they give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil and give life to the world’s nature. They also provide us with materials for food and shelter.
There is a wealth of research now that demonstrates how trees improve our air, soil and water quality; they improve mental health and well-being; provide a sense of place and enhance property values. Increasing canopy cover in urban areas is also a cost-effective means of mitigating urban heat islands and controlling storm water run-off.
Given the multiple benefits we receive from trees, the Council has prioritised enhancements of its existing trees and increased tree planting in its Climate Change and Environment Strategy.
Benefits of Trees
Tree and Woodland Strategy
Cambridgeshire is one of England’s least wooded counties, with only 3.6% woodland cover. Our Tree and Woodland Strategy sets out how we will restore woodland heritage, expand nature, and contribute to the England Trees Action Plan.
Our land Assets
We manage extensive holdings that offer huge potential for tree and woodland creation:
- 87,000 highway trees
- 70+ corporate and community buildings
- 240+ schools with existing tree cover
- Farmland, nature reserves, and highway verges
By working with partners and landowners, we can make space for nature across Cambridgeshire.
A Modern Approach
We’re moving beyond traditional practices to integrate nature into all land management.
Our guiding principle:
‘The right tree in the right place.’
Species and locations will be chosen to support wildlife, landscape character, and soil health avoiding harm to natural, built, and historic environments.
1. Protect trees and woodlands of ecological, cultural, or landscape value
2. Create new woodlands and plant sustainable species
3. Support nature-based solutions for climate and flood resilience
4. Embed tree planning in development and transport decisions
5. Engage communities through education and volunteering
Delivering Change
Our flagship Forestry Commission-funded woodland creation programme, will establish new woodlands in partnership with schools, landowners, and local groups. Trees are living infrastructure essential for biodiversity, climate resilience, and community wellbeing.
