New home in Ely for Cambridgeshire Archives

The County Council has for some time been working to secure new premises, following an inspection by the National Archives which found that the current archives accommodation in the basement of Shire Hall was no longer fit for purpose.

The former Strikes Bowling Alley at The Dock, Ely has been converted into a new archives centre. It contains over seven miles of shelving within an environmentally controlled space. Plans for the site include an enhanced digitisation suite, so that many more documents can be made available online.

The building is well located within easy walking distance of Ely train station and town centre.

Temporary suspension of accessions

Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire Archives are currently not accepting deposits of records while we prepare for the move. The only exceptions will be (a) records defined as public records in the schedules to the Public Records Acts and  (b) records at immediate risk of permanent loss or destruction. For all other records,  we ask that you postpone bringing them in to either Archive until we reopen at Ely later in 2019.

Historical Research Service and enquiries
