Cambridgeshire flood risk management strategy

Flooding can affect homes, roads, businesses, and communities. To help reduce the risk of flooding, the council has a Local Flood Risk Management Strategy (LFRMS). This page explains what the strategy is, why it is important, and how it helps manage flood risk in Cambridgeshire.

What is a Local Flood Risk Management Strategy (LFRMS)?

A local flood risk management strategy is a plan that explains:

• Where flood risk comes from
• Who is responsible for managing different types of flooding
• What actions can help reduce flood risk now and in the future

The strategy looks mainly at local flooding which includes:

• Surface water from heavy rain
• Ordinary watercourses like ditches and streams
• Groundwater flooding

Who prepares the strategy?

Cambridgeshire County Council prepares the strategy as one of its roles as the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA).

The strategy is developed with help from many partners, including:

• District and city councils
• The Environment Agency
• Internal Drainage Boards
• Water companies
• Emergency services

What timescale does the strategy cover?

The latest version of the strategy was approved in March 2022 and covers the period 2021-2027.
