What is a by-election?

Cambridgeshire County Council holds elections every four years when residents vote for the 61 councillors who will represent them in our 59 divisions.

You elect a councillor using the 'First Past the Post' system. You vote for one candidate in your local area and the candidate with the most votes wins.

If a councillor has to leave their seat during the four year term, we hold a by-election in the constituency for residents to elect a replacement.
