Where is the northern section?
Improvements and planned maintenance will take place from Pagram Way, Cambridge (near Orchard Park) to St Ives Park & Ride.

Programme of work

Installation of separation fencing
Following completion of works between Histon and Impington and Orchard Park, works will be carried out on the Orchard Park spur and from the Orchard Park junction south. Works on the section between Orchard Park and Cambridge North station will be carried out between February and June 2026. Works will be carried out from Histon and Impington to St Ives from summer 2026.
Work started on Monday 1 December 2025 from Pagram Way, Cambridge (near Orchard Park) to the city bound Histon and Impington stop, south of New Road, Impington. The work from Pagram Way to Histon will be finished by 17 April, including some work around the Orchard Park junction.
During the works, there is a full closure of the busway in place, but we have been able to keep access open to the maintenance track, the path alongside the busway, for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Route A buses were diverted from Histon along Cambridge Road and onto Histon Road into Cambridge city centre.
- Route B buses were diverted from Histon along Cambridge Road and via Orchard Park to rejoin the busway.
Please note:
- Routes A and B will serve the stop outside the Station Stores in Histon (Cambridge-bound).
- Route A will no longer serve Orchard Park and will instead serve the first stop on Histon Road (Blackhall Road).
- Passengers will now need to board Busway B at Orchard Park rather than route A and this will be from the opposite side of the road to take account of the temporary change in direction. i.e. Cambridge-bound stops will become Huntingdon-bound.
- Passengers for Route A will need to change at New Square, or alternatively, use the temporary stop on Histon Road.
- A section of the path which runs alongside the busway will be kept open to pedestrians and cyclists throughout the works. Cyclists may be required to dismount in places.
Phase 7 Cambridge Regional College to Milton Road
Following the completion of works between Orchard Park and Histon and Impington this section will reopen to buses and crews will move the works compound south of the Guided Busway Orchard Park turning and start installation of separation fencing near Cambridge Regional College.
The section of the Busway between Cambridge Regional College and Milton Road will close to buses but the maintenance track will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists. Buses will serve temporary stops for Cambridge Research Park.
Impington boundary fencing
We are replacing the temporary boundary fencing near to the levelling ponds in Impington with permanent fencing.
We will be putting in a 1.8m high green mesh fence between the field and the Guided Busway. There will be gaps in the new fence to allow small mammals to pass through.
We do not need to remove any trees or vegetation to install the fence.
Work is anticipated to take two weeks and will be completed under the current closure.
Path flooding
We continue to monitor flooding on the maintenance track. The section between St Ives Park & Ride/Second Drove and Fen Drayton Lakes near Holywell reopened following the clearance of debris from the path. Whilst the water levels have gone down, the section between Holywell and Mow Fen Drove, Swavesey remains closed for everyone’s safety. Should the current dry weather continue, we anticipate clearing flooding debris and reopening the maintenance track in full later in the week.
We remind people that trespassing on the busway is strictly prohibited, and that they must keep to the maintenance track or formal crossing points for their own safety. Trespassing on the busway tracks is an offence and the County Council reserve the right to take enforcement action.

Histon and Impington Public Engagement
We will be re-scheduling the public engagement event which we originally anticipated holding in March to May. Following the local survey and stakeholder engagement, we anticipate creating a new formal crossing at the Community Orchard. A new crossing in this location was the most popular choice with both stakeholders and those responding to the survey.
We will share designs for the new crossing and footpath improvements at this public drop-in session. Holding this event in May means we can provide an update on related active travel connections to Girton which are currently under development.
Histon fencing
Work to install perimeter fencing between the Hains factory and the St Audrey’s Road crossing point was completed in November 2025.
In August 2025, we announced a lower speed limit on the Guided Busway at Histon. Speed limit reduction enables potential risks we have identified with pedestrians crossing the Busway track to be further reduced. In advance of the new fencing being installed to separate the busway and the maintenance track along the whole length of the Guided Busway, undesignated informal crossing points have been closed with the need for this outlined to residents at public meetings in late 2025.
Upcoming events
We are committed to engaging with communities on the review of formal crossing points. Further details on engagement will be provided here.
