Works update - 19 June 2026

Orchard Park to Milton Road works continue with fencing being installed between Orchard Park and Cambridge Regional College. As well as separation fencing between the path and the Busway, perimeter fencing is being installed between Garry Drive and the Busway track. This section is expected to be finished by the end of July. Following this, we will move to the Milton Road to Cambridge North section to complete separation fencing in this area.

The closure of the Busway track remains in place in this area. The path is open to pedestrians and cyclists.

The A bus service uses the route via Orchard Park. B Buses are diverted around the closure via Kings Hedges Road and Milton Road and continue to serve Cambridge North Station in both directions.

The following alternative stops are available for the B bus:

  • For Cambridge Regional College, please use Orchard Park West stops

  • In place of Histon & Impington stop city-bound, services depart from the number 8 bus stop near the shop (the existing St Ives bound stop on the Busway remains open).

  • The alternative stop for Cambridge Science Park is on Milton Road outside the car dealership and on the opposite side of the road (what3words (///chair.palace.intelligible).

  • The bus continues to serve Milton Road. It stops outside the Golden Hind and uses the new style bus stop diagonally opposite (what3words (///crisis.chips.outfit).

Work from Histon to St Ives is expected to start in late summer, and we will share more details on the programme and phasing once we have appointed the contractor. Crossing improvement works will be co-timed with the separation fencing works wherever possible to make best use of the required Busway closures.

Pagram Way to Histon & Impington city-bound stop/Cambridge Road

Works on phase 6 have been completed and works start on phase 7, south of Pagram Way, Orchard Park from Sunday 19 April.

In this area we have installed separation fencing between the Busway and the maintenance track. We have also replaced temporary boundary fencing near to the levelling ponds with permanent 1.8m high green mesh fencing. There are gaps in the new fence at 9m intervals to allow small mammals to pass over the Busway.

Toad tunnels along this part of the Busway have now been cleared of debris, which should improve the ability of amphibians and small animals to get from one side of the Busway to the other. This work was undertaken with the guidance of an ecologist and took place recently following the end of winter hibernation time.

Path flooding

The path alongside the Busway was closed near Fenstanton Lakes due to flooding following the wet weather earlier in the year.

With the more recent sunny weather, the flooded section has now completely dried out, and the path has been reopened to pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

We remind people that trespassing on the busway is strictly prohibited, and that they must keep to the maintenance track or formal crossing points for their own safety. Trespassing on the busway tracks is an offence and the County Council reserve the right to take enforcement action.

We alert busway users to flooding closures and path reopenings via our social media networks, please follow our channels:

We encourage sharing of these notices into local community groups and pages.

Histon fencing

Work to install perimeter fencing between the Hains factory and the St Audrey’s Road crossing point was completed in November 2025.

In August 2025, we announced a lower speed limit on the Guided Busway at Histon. Speed limit reduction enables potential risks we have identified with pedestrians crossing the Busway track to be further reduced. In advance of the new fencing being installed to separate the busway and the maintenance track along the whole length of the Guided Busway, undesignated informal crossing points have been closed with the need for this outlined to residents at public meetings in late 2025.

Events

Histon and Impington public meeting

Following the local survey and stakeholder engagement, we anticipate creating a new formal crossing at the Community Orchard. A new crossing in this location was the most popular choice with both stakeholders and those responding to the survey.

We held a public drop-in event on the evening of Tuesday 9 June at Histon Baptist Church to discuss proposals for the new crossing.  We would like to thank all those who came along and shared their feedback at the public drop-in session at Histon Baptist Church last week. Around 30 people attended the event and lots of helpful feedback was received about the plans.

We shared information about the new formal Busway crossing between the Community Orchard and factory, showing images of the anticipated design and path. As part of these works, we are also proposing a new surfaced path along the edge of Manor Field to the alleyway at the rear of Somerset Road. This should provide all-weather access via the crossing to the Busway path and Histon Woods.

Work to install the new crossing will take place at the same time as separation fencing is installed in this location. Work on the separation fencing along this section of the Busway is expected to start in late summer. More detailed timings will be shared on this page and in the newsletter nearer the start of works.

We plan to hold other similar engagement events elsewhere as works progress and new crossing arrangements are considered in other locations along the Busway.
