Programme of work

Routine Maintenance Works
We’ll be carrying out routine maintenance on the Busway over upcoming weekends, which will involve local closures of both the Busway and the path which runs alongside it.
Signs will be in place to inform people in advance of these works. We’ll provide further updates on future planned closures through the newsletter and on our website.
Works will take place between Swavesey and Longstanton on the weekends of the 25-26 April and 2-3 May 2026. this section will reopen to buses and crews will move the works compound south of the Guided Busway Orchard Park turning and start installation of separation fencing near Cambridge Regional College.
The section of the Busway between Cambridge Regional College and Milton Road will close to buses but the maintenance track will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists. Buses will serve temporary stops for Cambridge Research Park.
Pagram Way to Histon & Impington city-bound stop/Cambridge Road
Works on phase 6 have been completed and works start on phase 7, south of Pagram Way, Orchard Park from Sunday 19 April.
In this area we have installed separation fencing between the Busway and the maintenance track. We have also replaced temporary boundary fencing near to the levelling ponds with permanent 1.8m high green mesh fencing. There are gaps in the new fence at 9m intervals to allow small mammals to pass over the Busway.
Toad tunnels along this part of the Busway have now been cleared of debris, which should improve the ability of amphibians and small animals to get from one side of the Busway to the other. This work was undertaken with the guidance of an ecologist and took place recently following the end of winter hibernation time.
Path flooding
The path alongside the Busway was closed near Fenstanton Lakes due to flooding following the wet weather earlier in the year.
With the more recent sunny weather, the flooded section has now completely dried out, and the path has been reopened to pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.
We remind people that trespassing on the busway is strictly prohibited, and that they must keep to the maintenance track or formal crossing points for their own safety. Trespassing on the busway tracks is an offence and the County Council reserve the right to take enforcement action.

Histon and Impington Public Engagement
We will be re-scheduling the public engagement event which we originally anticipated holding in March to May. Following the local survey and stakeholder engagement, we anticipate creating a new formal crossing at the Community Orchard. A new crossing in this location was the most popular choice with both stakeholders and those responding to the survey.
We will share designs for the new crossing and footpath improvements at this public drop-in session. Holding this event in May means we can provide an update on related active travel connections to Girton which are currently under development.
Histon fencing
Work to install perimeter fencing between the Hains factory and the St Audrey’s Road crossing point was completed in November 2025.
In August 2025, we announced a lower speed limit on the Guided Busway at Histon. Speed limit reduction enables potential risks we have identified with pedestrians crossing the Busway track to be further reduced. In advance of the new fencing being installed to separate the busway and the maintenance track along the whole length of the Guided Busway, undesignated informal crossing points have been closed with the need for this outlined to residents at public meetings in late 2025.
Upcoming events
We are committed to engaging with communities on the review of formal crossing points. Further details on engagement will be provided here.
