Where is the northern section?
Improvements and planned maintenance will take place from Pagram Way, Cambridge (near Orchard Park) to St Ives Park & Ride.
For reference please view the Guided Busway network map (opens as PDF).
Programme of work
Planned weekend maintenance
We will be carrying out routine maintenance on the busway over upcoming weekends, which will involve localised closures of both the Guided Busway and the path which runs alongside it. Signage will be in place to inform people in advance.
- 15-16 November 2025, St Ives to Swavesey
- 22-23 November 2025, St Ives to Swavesey
- 30 November to 1 December 2025, Oakington to Park Lane, Histon
We’ll also be doing a survey of all the lighting to identify issues that need fixing and our team are out inspecting the maintenance track for any issues that need our attention.
Installation of separation fencing
Work starts on Monday 1 December 2025 from Pagram Way, Cambridge (near Orchard Park) to the city bound Histon and Impington stop, south of New Road, Impington.
During the works, there will be a full closure of the busway and the maintenance track in place.
- Route A buses will be diverted from Histon along Cambridge Road and onto Histon Road into Cambridge city centre.
- Route B buses will divert from Histon along Cambridge Road and via Orchard Park to rejoin the busway.
Please note:
- Routes A and B will serve the stop outside the Mace shop in Histon (Cambridge-bound).
- Route A will no longer serve Orchard Park and will instead serve the first stop on Histon Road (Blackhall Road).
- Passengers will now need to board Busway B at Orchard Park rather than route A and this will be from the opposite side of the road to take account of the temporary change in direction. i.e. Cambridge-bound stops will become Huntingdon-bound.
- Passengers for Route A will need to change at New Square, or alternatively, use the temporary stop on Histon Road.
- A pedestrian and cycle diversion will also be in place.
Histon perimeter fencing
Work to install new perimeter fencing along a section of the busway between the Hains factory and the St Audrey’s Road crossing point in Histon was completed on Wednesday 5 November 2025 and the busway and maintenance track has now reopened.
In August 2025, we announced a lower speed limit on the Guided Busway at Histon. Speed limit reduction enables potential risks we have identified with pedestrians crossing the Busway track to be further reduced. In advance of the new fencing being installed to separate the busway and the maintenance track along the whole length of the Guided Busway, we will be closing off undesignated crossing points.
This was explained to residents at a recent public meeting. We understand people's frustrations about the fencing, but people must keep to the formal crossing points for their own safety. We are committed to engaging with the community on the future of safe crossing points and will continue to liaise with local councillors and hold public meetings to discuss this with residents.
Upcoming events
Join us, in person, at our drop-in event on Tuesday 25 November 2025, from 5.30-8.30pm, at Histon Baptist Church.
Residents of Histon and Impington are invited to come along and hear about the planned installation of separation fencing and to share views about proposals for a new crossing point.
We are committed to engaging on the review of formal crossing points and we shall be recommending to the Highways and Transport Committee that funding is allocated to install safe crossing points.
