Vital support scheme extended

01 November 2022

A vital support scheme aimed at helping vulnerable residents struggling with the rising costs of living has been extended for a further five months.

The Household Support Fund (HSF) which has already helped over 35,000 people since launching last November has been extended until March 2023. The latest extension has been granted by the government's Department for Work and Pensions to support people over the autumn and winter period, with the council receiving just over £3.5 million for the scheme.

From today (Tuesday 1 November) Cambridgeshire residents who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for food or energy vouchers. Those seeking support can apply by visiting here.

Support for pensioners is being delivered on our behalf by Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. You can apply by phone on 01223 221929 or by email at hsf@ageukcap.org.uk

Councillor Tom Sanderson, chair of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Communities, Social Mobility and Inclusion Committee, said: “We know this is an intensely difficult time, with even more people struggling with the cost of living right now. Bills have risen out of all proportion and as we move into winter many people are becoming increasingly concerned.

“I am extremely proud of the work we have already done to help those in need, but we never rest on our laurels and that’s why we’ve extended this vital fund. If you are struggling, please get in touch with us at the earliest opportunity. Along with the HSF, we have a range of support measures in place to help people struggling to pay bills, manage their energy better and get everyday essentials.”

The council is also working with district authorities across the county to promote welcoming spaces that local people can visit during the autumn and winter, to take part in community events, enjoy a meal or just to spend time in a warm space. Visit here for more information. We are also reminding people that Cambridgeshire Libraries are open throughout winter, providing many services. Find out more here.
