Your care records are part of your story.
Many care leavers tell us that reading their records helps them understand more about their childhood, family history and the experiences that shaped their lives.
For some people, reading their records can be positive and bring answers to questions they have had for a long time.
For others, it can be emotional and sometimes upsetting. Please don't do this alone.
Your records may include information about difficult experiences, family relationships, loss, trauma or decisions made when you were a child.
Reading this information can bring up strong feelings, even if these events happened a long time ago.
You may also have questions after reading your records.
Because of this, we encourage you to have support around you when accessing your records.
If you are working with the Leaving Care Team, please speak to your Personal Adviser first. They can help you think about what information you want to see and support you before, during and after receiving your records.
You do not have to go through this process on your own.
You can choose what you want to see
You do not have to request your whole file.
You might only want information about:
- why you came into care
- your family history
- your Pathway Plans
- a specific period of your life
Some people prefer to access information gradually rather than reading everything at once.
It's okay to take your time.
What might be in your records?
Your records may include:
- notes written by social workers
- information from foster carers or residential staff
- review records
- Pathway Plans
- assessments and reports
- letters and important documents
To protect other people's privacy, some names or information may be removed before your records are shared. This is called redaction.
How to access your records
If you are working with the Leaving Care Team
Speak to your Personal Adviser.
They can:
- help you make a request
- explain the process
- support you to understand the information
- help you access emotional support if needed
If you are not working with the Leaving Care Team or are over 25
You can:
- Complete the Data Protection Rights request form - Cambridgeshire County Council
- Email your request to data.protection@cambridgeshire.gov.uk
- Include proof of your identity
If you wish, let the team know that you are a care leaver.
How long will it take?
The Council will usually provide your records within three months of receiving your request.
A member of the team will contact you to discuss how your records will be shared with you.
Need support?

Remember: Accessing your records is your choice. There is no right or wrong age to do it. Take your time, ask for support, and only access information when you feel ready.
