Libraries of Sanctuary: Welcome to Cambridgeshire

Public libraries play an important role in welcoming people into our communities. This includes refugees, migrants, people seeking sanctuary, and other new arrivals.

Cambridgeshire Libraries have received Library of Sanctuary status. This national award celebrates libraries that demonstrate hospitality, solidarity and welcome to new arrivals in the area. The title was awarded by City of Sanctuary UK.

This page explains how our services can support new arrivals. It also signposts to other organisations that offer information and support. This includes housing, internet access, learning English, finding a job and more.

Anyone living, working, visiting, or studying in Cambridgeshire or neighbouring counties is welcome to join the library. This applies even if you just want to access our online resources. Membership is free.

You are welcome to join the library without any documents. We will ask for your name, contact details and date of birth. The process takes about 5 minutes. Your membership will be valid for 3 years.

We offer a range of resources to support new arrivals into our communities. PressReader gives library members free access newspapers and magazines. There are over 7000 newspapers and magazine titles from 140 different countries. You can translate the titles into several languages and use a text to speech option.

Learn My Way offers free digital skills courses. There are modules on managing your money and health online, finding a job, and using public services.

We also have laptops available for loan for a period of 7 days, free to members of Cambridgeshire Libraries.

We also have a range of foreign language and dual language books and language learning resources. These are both physical and digital - you can browse and reserve on our catalogue.
