What is Extra Care Housing?
Extra Care Housing (also known as Independent Living with care and support) enables older people to live independently. Like sheltered housing, you have a self contained flat with your own front door. With Extra Care Housing you also have the reassurance of a care team on site 24 hours a day.
This on-site care can meet your personal care needs and can respond to emergency calls, giving you and your family peace of mind. Extra Care Housing can be rented, owned outright or shared ownership (part-owned and part-rented).
Many people choose Extra Care Housing as an alternative to a residential care home. It can meet their care needs and provides greater independence and flexibility. For example - you can still have family and friends visit and stay.
If you would like to move to Extra Care Housing, our social care team will carry out a social care assessment. This is in line with the Care Act 2014. This will confirm your eligible care and support needs to support your application. We can help you to find the care that you need. You can either use the on-site carers, or find your own care.
Extra Care schemes have a number of one and two bedroom flats. Care is available, if required. Each scheme offers activities which you can choose to join in with and meals in a communal dining area. Most schemes have a shared lounge, laundry room, hairdressers and a guest suite for visitors to stay.
