Cross border permits

Councils are only required to provide waste disposal facilities for residents of the area that they serve. Hertfordshire County Council has recently stopped non-residents using their Recycling Centres except where an agreement has been made to allow continued use.

Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire County Councils have agreed to allow use of Royston Recycling Centre (Hertfordshire County Council website) by Cambridgeshire residents and Thriplow Household Recycling Centre by Hertfordshire residents. This aims to avoid increased travel time and costs and reduce resulting CO2 emissions.

To monitor cross-border movements, Cambridgeshire residents wishing to visit Royston Recycling Centre and Hertfordshire residents wishing to use Thriplow Household Recycling Centre need to obtain a permit using links below before visiting for the first time.

No physical permit will be provided, so when arriving at site, permit holders should make a member of staff aware, so that the visit can be recorded. There are no implications to the permit holder of recording visits, it just helps the two councils to monitor the number of visits made in each direction.

Please note that permits are for cars only at both sites except for `Blue Badge’ holders using wheelchair accessible vehicles for everyday transport. Other types of vehicles must continue to use sites in the resident’s home county.

Please note that applications are through the existing e-permit system and that it has not been possible to remove reference to e-permits. The resulting permit will be correct.
