New Household Recycling Centre at March

Recycling facilities in March were approved for a £3.9 million upgrade. Councillors backed the new site proposals at the Environment & Green Investment Committee.

The project will relocate the Household Recycling Centre to land next to the existing site on Hundred Road, March.

The new split-level facility will be more accessible. It will be easier for people to put items directly into containers, without the need to climb stairs. The new site will also help meet the needs of the area’s growing population.

Relocation of the recycling facility means that the existing site can remain open throughout the works. Construction of the new site is expected to take around nine months. It will start as soon as possible after the design and build contract has been awarded.

The larger site will offer more space for vehicle access, queuing, and parking. It will also better accommodate those arriving by bike or on foot. Access to the new site will remain via a new entrance from Hundred Road. There will also be new arrangements for the waste contractor’s vehicles to improve site safety.

The recycling centre will have a provision for a re-use shop for residents to donate functioning items to be re-used. We aim to encourage the re-use of items that would otherwise go to waste. This aligns with Council ambitions for a greener Cambridgeshire. Residents are supported to reduce, re-use, recycle and repair items. This helps to avoid unnecessary landfill contributions.

The current March Household Recycling Centre will return to the landfill tenant FCC Environmental Services in December 2025. They will restore the site to meet planning requirements.

Public Consultation

A consultation on changes to the household recycling facilities was carried out in summer 2022. Following a successful tendering exercise, the scheme costs have been confirmed to be around £3.9 million. These final costs include inflation and recent increases in construction material costs and labour.
